Erica Swaim Step Up Program Director, IEA Coach, 4H Club Leader, & Riding Instructor
Sam joined the Lakeside Family from the very beginning, helping to design all of our processes and protocols for equine care, on site training, and our lesson program. Sam has trained several horses, across multiple disciplines, throughout her career and accepts new clients monthly at our facility.
"My childhood started with horses around age 10. by age 13, I was starting 2-year-olds for a trainer's lesson program. My interests split in highschool between contesting/rodeo and dressage. During that journey my personal horse, "Dandy" and I won 1st at the state highschool pole bending competition. I also won a custom saddle at the national dressage team show while in college, and have since received my bronze medal in dressage. In my life and career, i have trained with as many people as I could and will never be done learning. I encourage my students to remain teachable and seek opportunities to continue to grow." Most of Sam's experience has been with young horses and/or young riders. "The foundation to build on, is what I focus on most in my lessons and in my training."
Sam is married to caleb and together they have one daughter, Mckenzie (3) and two dogs that can be found at the farm daily. Sam strives to build a life for "Kenzie" where she is around great, educated horse people and all the animals possible!
My mom's father won a $1 raffle for a pony at work when she was young and we always joked saying, "that $1 ticket, cost him thousands of dollars later." My mom later moved on to showing Quarter Horses as a teen, where she met me dad in high school. Owning and showing horses has always been a part of my family. I started showing western pleasure around age 4. As a youth, I showed halter, western pleasure, horsemanship, showmanship, and trail. In 2002, I placed first in the state in 14-18 Western Pleasure. Upon graduating high school, I joined the equestrian team at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods where I became a Regional Champion, Zones Champion, and National Qualifier. I graduated SMWC in 2007 and took a break from horses to focus on my marriage and career. I hold memberships in ARHA, AQHA, NSBA, IQHA, MQHA, and APHA. As an amateur rider with no formal training, I feel incredibly blessed to have our team at lakeside to learn and grow with.
I've been married to my husband, DJ, for 15 years and we have two children, Wesley (9) and Darby (12). Some of the things we enjoy as a family includes being members of White River Christian Church, attending various racing events, supporting local community non-profits/charities, snow skiing, and spending time on the Morse Lake. We are passionate about providing a safe space for our students to feel "at home" and build lasting friendships. We are firm believers that spending time in the barn builds character, responsibility, and work ethic.
Our daughter, Darby began learning to ride english as an 8 year-old. In 2023, I purchased my first Hunter Under Saddle trained Quarter Horse, "Huntin' Good Vibes" or "Cash", as we like to call him. We finished our 2023 show year as 2x Reserve Congress Champions in the Level 1 Amateur Walk Trot, under trainer Nicole Brown Veldoff. In 2024 "CASH" made his debut in the youth classes with one of our students, Evalynn Jas, where they became 2x RESERVE CONGRESS CHAMPIONS! We're looking forward to another successful and fun year of showing.
Erica brings twenty years of equine experience to our program. she joined our team with Multiple goals in mind. One of those goalS was to design a program focused on helping students, who are ready to graduate a commercial lesson program, transition into first time horse ownership and/or Leasing. Through our "Step Up" program in 2024, we have welcomed five first time horse owners into our stables. Erica also teaches weekly lessons in showmanship, equitation, horesmanship, Hunters, and jumping. Erica co-leads A 4H Club called "The All-arounders" and was the 2014 Hamilton County 4H Queen. Away from the barn, She is a board certified occupational therapy assistant. erica has been married to her husband, Quentin, for five years and they have one son, Rex (3).
